SafeSport & AUSKF

The All US Kendo Federation recently announced that, starting in April 2025, all individuals seeking high-rank promotions in Kendo will be required to register with SafeSport and complete courses on sexual abuse prevention, harassment awareness, and concussion education. This is the latest step in the AUSKF's tiered approach to phasing in SafeSport training across the organization. Understanding what SafeSport is and what needs to be done is important to all regional federations, Dojos, and practitioners.

What is SafeSport?

SafeSport is a non-profit national organization dedicated to preventing abuse, misconduct, and unsafe practices in sports. Established in 2017 by the US Congress under the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act, it oversees policies, education, and reporting systems to protect athletes from sexual abuse, harassment, bullying, and physical harm.

Why is SafeSport important?

SafeSport helps create a safe environment for all athletes and protects them from abuse. Training is mandatory for coaches, officials, and athletes in many national sports organizations. SafeSport also provides a structured way to report abuse and misconduct.

Compliance with the Safe Sport Act, which is federal law, is mandatory with national sports organizations. Many other countries have implemented programs similar to SafeSport, as there is a global trend in recognizing the importance of mandatory education and policies to protect athletes. Further, many insurance carriers require sports organizations to implement abuse prevention training as a condition of coverage.

SafeSport and the AUSKF Community

This upcoming April 2025 requirement for Kendo Kodansha examinees is part of the AUSKF’s ongoing efforts to integrate SafeSport policies. This initiative began in 2023 with participation by all AUSKF directors, followed by regional federation presidents in 2024. The next steps should involve instructors, including those in Iaido and Jodo. Even though SafeSport training is not required for all AUSKF members, it is crucial for everyone in the community to foster a culture of respect and accountability.

How You Can Help

Regional federations and Dojos should make sure all officers and senior members are aware of current AUSKF policies concerning SafeSport.

Additionally, regional federations and Dojos can take proactive steps to align with SafeSport principles, such as:

  • Implementing policies regular training, ideally on an annual basis

  • Ensuring all Dojo members. Visitors, event participants, and spectators, review information on sexual misconduct and sign an acknowledgment to confirm their understanding. A sample based on SafeSport training, is provided here.

Conclusion

SafeSport was established by Congress to protect athletes and applies to national sports organizations. As the AUSKF continues to phase in SafeSport, it is essential for regional federations, Dojos, and individual practitioners to stay informed and engaged, regardless of whoever is required to complete SafeSport training.
